Facing a tight 9-week deadline, our San Antonio charter school successfully partnered with Courtex Description: Facing a tight 9-week deadline, our San Antonio charter school successfully partnered with Courtex Construction for professional tennis court resurfacing. Learn how we achieved a safe, durable, and fully operational court before the fall season.
As facilities director at a charter school in San Antonio, I’ve learned that big problems tend to show up at the worst times.
Last April, we hosted a spring family day on campus. Toward the end of the event, one of our English teachers lunged for a shot, caught his toe on a crack, and landed hard on the court. He wasn't badly hurt—just bruised—but the moment highlighted a serious issue.
The courts were in rough shape. Structural cracks ran the length of both courts, and the lines were so faded that teachers were using cones to mark service zones. The surface had lost traction, and rain had caused erosion. It wasn't just unsightly; it was dangerous. We realized we were in urgent need of athletic court repair.
We had a nine-week window between the end of school and the first day back. This isn't much time to demo, prep, resurface, cure, and stripe a court, especially not with San Antonio's challenging summer weather. We needed a solution, and fast.
I started calling around. Most of the vendors we had on file didn't specialize in athletic surface coatings. One company suggested a quick "patch and coat" job, but couldn't guarantee proper water runoff or safety grip—a major liability concern.
I kept looking and was eventually referred by a colleague at a nearby private school. “We used them last year,” he said. “They specialize in tennis court resurfacing in San Antonio, and they handled everything from slope correction to final coatings. And they were fast.”
The company? Courtex Construction.
That was what we needed: professional, fast, but not sloppy.
I called Courtex Construction and explained our situation. They sent a specialist out two days later for a site visit. He walked the courts, pointing out sub-base cracking, measuring pooling near the centerline, and asking about usage.
“Do you run lessons or clinics?” “Yes,” I said. “And five days of P.E. each week.”
“Okay. You’ll want something durable, low maintenance, and textured for traction. Our process includes grinding and filling the structural cracks, re-leveling the surface where needed, and adding two coats of specialized acrylic with a silica blend for grip. That will extend the life by at least ten years.”
I asked the question that had kept me up all week: “Can Courtex Construction finish before in-service starts?”
“If we start by mid-June,” he confirmed, “you’ll be ready in time. But we’ll need a decision soon.”
Courtex Construction sent a proposal that night. It was thorough: Full professional tennis court resurfacing, custom school logo stenciled onto the apron area, LED lighting tune-up, new net posts, and full cleanup. No surprises. Our school board approved it within 48 hours.
The Courtex Construction crew arrived the first Monday after school let out. They were professional, on time, and tidy. Every day they made visible progress:
We chose deep green with a royal blue playing area and bright white lines. The mascot stencil went down on week three, and the courts had gone from dusty and dangerous to something worthy of a college program.
As soon as teachers came back in early August, we held a launch event. Students returned the following week, and I watched them sprint across the baseline, cut toward the net, and move without hesitation for the first time in years. They now had a safe, high-traction surface to play on.
Our tennis coach told me the new surface changed everything. “It’s the first time our players have had a true home-court advantage,” she said.
The acrylic court coating has held up beautifully, even during the heavy September rains. We signed a long-term maintenance plan with the same San Antonio commercial athletic court contractors, who now check in each quarter to make sure we’re still in great shape.
This fall, we hosted our first middle school match against a visiting team. Their coach pulled me aside afterward and said, “I’ve been to a lot of schools—and these might be the nicest courts I’ve seen.”
That’s when I knew we made the right call. We chose Courtex Construction because our students deserve safe, excellent places to learn, play, and grow. And that’s exactly what they delivered.
